Is this a serious proposal? Yes and no; Euro-map is an artwork by the UK based artist Jonathan Trayner. It was produced to explore ideas of how politics and culture interact and as a critque of top-down solutions to social problems, rationalism and utopianism. Euro-map is intentionally silly, but no more so than the current set up of the EU. It could be the starting point for a discussion about how we view nationhood and the future of various political forms in a globalised world. Is there a political agenda here? The proposal has no particular political bias but as it favours the local and the trans-national over the status quo it could fit in with a variety of radical political ideas. What about expansion? As the EU expands to take in new territories the borders of the Administrative Regions will change and Regional Administrative Centres will change. The accession of the candidate countries Croatia and Macedonia will not affect the centre of gravity of the union as they will not expand it beyond its current geographical limits. If Turkey (an associate member since 1963 and a candidate country since 1999) were to join the centre of Europe will shift eastwards necessitating a total redrawing of the current boundaries. Can this be turned into the real EU? In theory yes , if enough people want it, if you wish to bring this proposal to the attention of your Member of the European Parliament you can find who they are on the European Parliament website. Why is the website only in English, French and German? Ideally this website should be in all 23 official EU languages, but the translation costs would be prohibitive. English, French and German are the three most commonly spoken languages in the EU. If you wish to translate this site into another EU language, official or otherwise, please contact us. |
